What’s On Fuerteventura – Editorial Up Date.

May is now half way through and here are few updates to take us to the end of the month.

Club La Santa IRONMAN

May 20th sees the Canarian round of the Ironman World Championships hosted by Club La Santa on Lanzarote.

This annual event is renowned as one of the longest and most grueling races in the world, yet it attracts up to 1,000 competitors from all nationalities who wish to test themselves against some of the finest, and certainly the fittest athletes on the planet.

All tours on Lanzarote are cancelled for that day, as there are road closures and diversions as whole Island is taken over by the Ironmen, their support crews, the race officials and helpers and the thousands of spectators.

The Ironman Race

It starts with a 3.8 Kilometre (2.4 Mile) swim at Playa Grande, Puerto del Carmen.

This is followed by a 180 Km (112 Mile) Cycle ride round Lanzarote, This gruelling route climbs to 600 metres as it takes in picturesque villages and places like La Geria, Mirador del Rio and Timanfaya National Park before finishing in Puerto Del Carmen.

Then as if this wasn’t enough, you then run a Marathon 42.2Km (26.2 miles) round 3 loops of a course in Puerto del Carmen then finish at Avenida de Las Playas.

Only the very strongest and fittest of athletes will even attempt this, I know the Brownlee Brothers and their dad have competed in the past, so there may well be a few celebrity athletes in the field.

If you want to spectate – you will need to take an early ferry to Playa Blanca, then a bus or taxi to Puerto del Carmen then find your way to a good vantage point – alternatively find a bar that has local Canarian TV and watch it while you relax with a beer.

Half Term

Starting next week we see the start of Half Term breaks, and the perpetual problem for parents, how to keep the kids amused.

Go to the beach, or let them play in the pool all day and they will be happy!!  You wish it was that easy!!

There is a new Ten Pin Bowling alley  – at the top of the pedestrian precinct by the roundabout (Under Don Pepe). For younger kids there is a Play Park, behind the Plaza.

There are also many trips and excursions, from Boat trips, Buggy tours, Jetski Safari, Big Game Fishing, E-Bike trips, Glass bottom boat, dolphin Safaris and many many more – For information and booking go to https://corralejo-excursions.com 

If you do decide to book any trips or excursions, be aware that some have very restricted numbers, and can be booked up very quickly, so if you want a particular trip for a particular day – you need to book early.
