What’s On Fuerteventura – Editorial March 2023

Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus” to all our welsh readers, and to non Welsh speakers, Happy St David’s day!

Winter is over!!

Most people will be glad February is finished as it was cold – La Palma island saw snow and a temperature of -5C.  There was also snow on Gran Canary and Tenerife and a huge thunder storm with torrential rain and hail stones on Lanzarote.

So let’s hope March is going to bring back the sun and warm weather everyone expects of Fuerteventura.

It’s Carnival Time!

March is going to be a busy month.  It is Carnival Time.  The biggest Carnival on the island is always the Corralejo Carnival which runs from the 2nd to the 12th March.

This is the first post Covid Carnival with no restrictions, so after 3 years of very limited events I expect this year to be spectacular.

All the traditional Carnival events will be happening, the Crowning of the Gala Queens, adult and child and of course the Drag Queen.

This year’s theme is Africa I expect to see lots of lions, elephants, giraffes and other exotic species prowling the streets.

As always the Carnival ends on the beach at the Old Harbour with the “Funeral of Senora Sardina” followed by a spectacular fireworks display

Tourist are welcome to join in, many of the local shops will have fancy dress outfits, especially for kids and there are lots of activities aimed at the smaller members of the family. As well as the official events, there will be other things happening.

I have posted the full official Carnival programme here; Corralejo Carnival of Carnivals 2023

The Invasion of Little Green Men

Laprechaun

After Carnival, you will just be getting your breath back when we have the annual Invasion of the Little Green men.  Friday the 17th March is of course St Patrick’s Day, so all the Irish pubs in town will be packed to the doors with Leprechauns who have jumped on their Shillelaghs and ridden the rainbows to land here to party, and the Irish do know how to party!!!

Busy Weekend

Six-Nations-Logo-Splash

That same  weekend is very important as it is final weekend of the  Guinness 6 Nations Championship. Ireland will be playing England with the possibility that they could  win the Championship, The Triple Crown and the Grand Slam.

However Scotland can still thwart the men in green, we can’t take the Grand Slam but we are still in the hunt for the Triple Crown and the Championship.   The full schedule for the 6 Nations is printed here;  Guinness 6 Nations Championship

Happy Mother's day

That weekend is important for another reason, Sunday the 19th is Mother’s Day, so kids, it is time to pamper your mum, breakfast in bed, or treat them to a meal, or a bunch of flowers, or at least a Card.

Now if you find you have forgotten this important day, don’t despair, nip along to Books, Cards and Things and pick up a card.

The rest of the month seems quiet by comparison, the residents will have a couple of weeks to get back to normal before the onrush of Easter, while tourist can relax and give their livers a rest.

Fuerteventura Virgin?

If you are visiting the island for the first time, you will enjoy the fabulous beaches, the crystal clear, sapphire blue seas. The wide variety of pubs and eateries to suit every budget. We also have fantastic musicians and entertainers – in fact everything you could possibly want.  Enjoy!!!

Help!!!

Help

Finally I am asking for some help, both from locals and visitors alike – I am looking for content for the magazine.  Anything really, from tourists. what you have done? What advice for other visitors? Best places to visit from your experiences. But please no restaurant or bar reviews or criticisms.

From locals I am wanting input about the Island, write ups on the villages, historical articles, wildlife articles, interesting photographs, articles of interest, walks, cycle trails, watersports, and other activities. I am sure there is a wealth of information out there, so if you have a few minutes to spare, put something together and email it to; info@whatsonfuerteventura.com  I can’t promise to publish everything, but I will be most grateful for your efforts.
