Whats on Fuerteventura – Editorial – February 2024
January is finally over, it has been a quiet month for the island with very little happening ,however it the weather has been good for the time of year, so let’s hope February goes as well.
In contrast to last month, February is quite a busy month. there are 2 Carnivals and one Fiesta in February.
1st is the four day Fiesta Nuestra Senora del Candeleria in La Oliva, This is a local Festival of music, dance and entertainment, as well as various sporting events and culminating in party for the local Children.
On a larger scale from the 1st -11th it is the first Carnival of the year in Caleta de Fuste, this years theme is “Far far away- A Fantasy Kingdom”.
The second Carnival “El Mundo Submarino” (Undersea World) runs from the 8th – 18th in Puerto del Rosario.
As some of you may know I am a musician, so February 3rd has a special meaning for me, it is the “Day The Music Died”.
On February 3rd 1959, a small plane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Vallens, and the Big Bopper crashed, just after take off from Ohio. So on our regular Friday afternoon Jam session at Paradise Bar, I expect there will be few tributes from the different musicians. If you are a musician you will be welcome to come along and join in.
One of the main things in February is Half Term Holidays, when many of you will be escaping the cold and rain of the UK, and taking your families out here for some well needed warmth and sunshine.
We have everything you need to have a great holiday, sunshine, great beaches with warm seas, a huge variety of great restaurants to suit every taste and budget, wonderful entertainment and bars. Also there are some exciting activities for you and your family. Boat trips, buggy tours, guided electric mountain bike trips, deep sea fishing, dolphin safaris, jeep safaris and many more.
Half term is a very busy time for all of these activities, and some of them have restricted numbers so – if you have a large group, want to do more than one trip, or have, a birthday or anniversary and want to do something special on the day, you need to book early to avoid disappointment. So check out our Excursions Agency https://corralejo-excursions.com, we have over 20 years experience in the local excursions & tourist industry.
Of course there will be a lot of Rugby fans out here, but don’t despair, you won’t miss a minute of the action or the atmosphere as many of the pubs will be showing the games live. Here are just a few in no particular order: Rosie O’Grady’s, Murphy’s, Corner House, The Corralejo Sports bar, O’Neill’s, An Caisteal, Flintstones, Weirdo’s, The York Bar, and many more, (apologies to the ones I’ve missed).
I have included the complete schedule in this wee magazine, click here; 6 Nations Schedule
So far I haven’t mentioned the Elephant in the room. The one thing that you cannot forget, or you can get into major trouble – what is it? St Valentine’s Day.
Whether you are the romantic type or not, this is one time of the year when you just have to pay special attention to your partner, or you will suffer.
There will be several restaurants doing “Valentine” specials, and a few bars with St Valentines parties going on.
Now if you have forgotten about it, and don’t want to end up in the dog house for the rest of your holiday – don’t despair, Books, Cards & Things have a huge selection of cards and gifts.
A St Valentine’s Tale
It was the 11th of February and Mike was braving the cold as he needed to go to the post
office for some stamps so he could send off his Valentine cards to his wife and daughter.
When he arrived at the Post Office there was the inevitable queue so he waited patiently
for his turn to come.
While waiting he couldn’t help noticing a middle-aged, balding man
standing in a corner with a huge pile of Valentine’s cards which he was putting into bright
pink envelopes with hearts all over them then sealing them with the legend ”SWALK’‘.
Then, after putting each card into an envelope he took a bottle of Channel No5 perfume
from his pocket and sprinkled the scent over the envelopes.
By now Mike’s curiosity had got the better of him, he wondered if this man was really
desperate, or if he had an amazing sex life, eventually he plucked up the courage to speak
“You seem to have a lot of girl friends” Mike asked, “it must be difficult to keep track of
“No” the man replied, “I’m happily married with three lovely kids”.
“So why so many cards? Mike enquired.
”It’s for my business. Every year I send out 500 Valentine’s cards signed ”Guess who?”
”What business are you in?” asked Mike.
“I’m a divorce lawyer ”.
I am sure there are many other things happening in Fuerteventura that I have missed, so keep an eye on our FaceBook page for other information.
